How to be a better Muslim: 5 Ways You Can Increase Your Iman

BY
Ayesha Faisall

Have you ever felt like you are going through an Iman (faith) dip in your life?

Do you feel anxious and lazy all the time? Or have you ever felt like your enthusiasm is somewhere fading?

Let me share something with you: Every Muslim experiences the highs and lows of Iman at some stage in life. The important thing is to strive to increase your faith when you notice it is becoming weak. Start by taking small steps that bring you closer to the Almighty. Allah is perfect but humans are not. Allah doesn’t expect perfection from us. He just wants us to “try”. Striving to become a better Muslim by making small changes in your everyday life is an achievement in itself. f you are nodding your head in yes right now, let me tell you that you don’t have to worry about this anymore.

Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah Almighty says: Whoever comes with a good deed will have the reward of ten like it and even more. Whoever comes with an evil deed will be recompensed for one evil deed like it or he will be forgiven. Whoever draws close to Me by the length of a hand, I will draw close to him by the length of an arm. Whoever draws close to Me the by length of an arm, I will draw close to him by the length of a fathom. Whoever comes to Me walking, I will come to him running. Whoever meets Me with enough sins to fill the earth, not associating any partners with Me, I will meet him with as much forgiveness.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2687

Here are 5 ways you can increase your Iman:

1. Read Quran

Reading Quran strengthens your connection with Almighty Allah. Read it with all your heart and soul even if it's only 1 Ayat per day. Read, pause and reflect. Focus on the translation. Focus on understanding what is written in the Holy book. Quran is the solution to all your problems. It is filled with Baraka. So if you haven’t prayed namaz or read Quran in a while, get up now and perform wudu, take your prayer mat, pray and read the Quran. It’s never too late to come back to Almighty Allah. Insha’Allah It will strengthen your connection with Allah and provide you comfort.

Allah says in the Holy Quran;

“He brings them out of darkness into the light” {Quran 2:257}

2. Believe in Allah’s mercy

Believing in Allah’s mercy is an important aspect of religion. No matter how low you are feeling right now, just remember that this too shall pass. Allah is closer to you than your jugular vein, He loves you more than 70 mothers. He will never abandon you. Just trust Him with all your heart and hand over your affairs to Him.

Allah also states in the Quran that he is the Most Merciful:

“Despair not of the mercy of Allah, indeed Allah forgives all sins” (Surah Az-Zumar verse: 53)

Perform the religious deeds with sincere intention and watch how your faith boosts up.

3. Pray

No matter how many prayers you have missed, try to perform your next salah. Even if you pray with wavering concentration-just don’t stop praying, don’t stop trying. After you are done with prayer, sit and make Dua'. Let your emotions, your feelings, and your thoughts follow. Allah knows everything about you, HE loves you. He will never abandon you. Tell Him what your heart is going through right now, tell Him how much you want comfort and relief, and ask Him to increase your Iman. These simple, honest and raw conversations will make you feel lighter than you can ever imagine!

"And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience]." {Quran 2:43}

4. Make Dua

Making dua' is one of the best ways to demonstrate Tawakkullah(reliance on Allah).

Your Lord has proclaimed, “Call upon Me, I will respond to you..." {Quran 40:60}

If Allaah wills, He can seal the heart from guidance. Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin al-‘Aas said, that he heard Allaah’s Messenger saying,

“All the hearts of the offspring of Aadam are between two fingers of Ar-Rehman’s Fingers, as one heart. He turns it (in any direction) as He wills. Then Allaah’s Messenger said, “O Allaah! The Turner of the hearts, turn our heart towards Your obedience.” [Saheeh Muslim vol.4, p.1397, no.6418]

A du’aa that he mentioned pertaining to this is:

Oh Turner of the Hearts, keep our Hearts firm on Your Religion
Yaa Muqallibal Quloob Thabbit Qalbee ‘alaa Deenik.
Oh turner of the hearts (Allah, the Most High), keep our hearts firm on your religion“ [Authenticated by al-Albanee in al-Jaam’i as-Sagheer 1323/7988]

So make dua' because everyone has their ups and downs in Iman(faith) but Allah is Ar-Rahman(The Compassionate) Ar-Raheem(The Most Merciful)

5. Give Charity

“Those who spend their wealth in charity, by night and by day, privately and publicly, will find that their reward is secure with their Lord; no fear shall be on them, nor shall they grieve” (Surah Al-Baqarah verse: 274)

Helping others creates feelings of peace and purpose. Not only does charity protects you from evil but it also has immense ajar and reward in this life and the hereafter. Islam is a complete code of conduct. Giving charity elevates your Iman and strengthens your faith. The relief associated with helping other people is remarkable.
